FIXTURE NEWS: Our next home game is against Beddau on Friday 22nd January at 7-15pm. We have also re-arranged the Rumney game for Friday 19th March again at 7-15pm.

With a new decade starting, Tredegar RFC look forward to the new year lying in ninth position in Division 1 Swalec East. Having played ten games so far, Tredegar have not asserted their authority in the division but have achieved two wins and accumulated six losing bonus points which allows them the opportunity to climb their way up the table in the early part  of next year.

So far this season both props Brett Mountney and Brendan Sullivan have been privileged to don the Tredegar shirt on more than fifty ocassions whilst Joe Campbell has notched up one hundred and fifty appearances on the flank. However Tredegar are coming to grips with the step up in class and although work commitments and injuries have occasionally decimated the side Tredegar have proved to be a tough nut to crack picking up  six losing bonus points in eight losses.

Even so should their nearest rivals Bedlinog leap frog them after playing their two games in hand Tredegar will still be seven points clear at the foot of the division. Raising their  season seventeen points a game average by a couple of points might be the key and a run of games against the other teams struggling   at the foot of Division 1 could see the newboys safe at the end of the season.

However grass roots rugby and the Tredegar cause has not been helped by the fact that the team has only played two fixtures during the last eleven weeks  mainly due to the weather and to the enforced break by the WRU to accomodate the Autumn Internationals. The gap in fixtures contibutes to teams losing cohesion and uniformity, drives spectators away from the game and deprives clubs of much needed revenue and bar takings. Indeed the the WRU should and must take heed of their English counterparts who allow club rugby to continue in England  whilst these  now almost meaningless games takes place.

Years ago the likes of say an All Blacks tour was special. They would come to the British Isles every four years or so with great expectation. They would take on various teams in all parts of Wales  and sometimes lose to makeshift teams  and huge crowds of  true rugby supporters would see them play  not just in Cardiff but in  places like Llanelli,  Newport and even Abertillery,  sometimes even on a midweek afternoon. Now they come every year,  as do the Wallabies and the Springboks who are are watched by people who have never watched a grass roots rugby match in their life and whilst  the WRU  should be applauded for staging such money spinning fixtures they should not do so at the expense of rugby clubs in the divisions below the regions and the WRU must allow club rugby to continue unabated.

Tredegar RFC wishes all its Supporters, Players, and Sponsors a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Tredegar start the season in Division One with a tough 43-7 defeat at the hands of Blackwood.

Tredegar's director of coaching Robert Johnson was pleased to add the following players to the current squad. Scrum half David Jones has committed to the Tredegar cause and winger Lee Johns has now also signed. Nicky Phibben and Christian Knapp have joined whilst Daniel Davies has returned now giving Tredegar more strength in depth in the threequarters. More signings are imminent to complement what is aleady a squad with huge potential.

Tredegar completed their pre-season preparations at Llantrisant and were given a stern test by the Black Army before running out vistors 20-5.

Splitting the game into four segments Tredegar's Director of Coaching Robert Johnston took the opportunity to play the whole squad and experimented with different combinations  giving players the opportunity to play in other positions than their own so as to gauge the capabiliities of the team that will figure in Division one.   Alyhough Llantrisant put in an all action display with devastating tackling  the Tredegar pack held the whip hand and with the return of former players Chris Edwards, Steve Evans and Leigh Taylor the visitors looked like overwhelming the division 2 outfit.

A smart try by new scrum half David Jones opened the scoring but after replacing more than half a dozen players at the first break Tredegar lost continuity and the home team drew level . Half time saw further changes as well as some positional and when Richard Powell broke away his pass gave debutant Lee Johns an easy run in to the line to extend Tredegar's lead.  Powell then made a huge break and his exceptional pace saw him cross to record Tredegar's third touchdown and if Powell decides to throw his lot in with the newcomers to Division 1 he is assured of first team rugby.

Hooker Daniel Horsman broke from the halfway line and when looked likely to be overhauled his perfectly timed pass sent Jamie Henthorne over for Tredegar's final try. Johnston said he was pleased with Tredegar's pre-season preparations and there was plenty of potential in this squad. Johnston added that Nicky Phibbens, Lee Johns, Christian Knapp, David Jones and Daniel Davies had all now completed their registrations and had joined the club, and also paid tribute to Graham Hill and Blaenau Gwent Borough Council for their hard work  in ensuring  the immaculate condition that the Recreation Ground   in Tredegar is in to kick off life in Division 1.

On Saturday Tredegar are away to last years Division 1 champions and host UWIC at their first home fixture the following week. Division 2 champions, Tredegar RFC  will face the Division 1 champions Blackwood on the opening encounter of the new season.

Director of coaching Robert Johnston said that Tredegar will face a huge challenge at the hands of their neighbours who, although winning Division 1 last year, have always been a force to be reckoned with.

Johnston added that Tredegar are looking to make their mark in this division and relishes the challenge.   Johnston announced Tredegar's squad and welcomed back former club captain Leigh Taylor and former players Chris Edwards and Steve Evans as well as Newport tight head prop Dan Evans. Shaun Thomas has also rejoined and will add to the team's point-scoring armoury.

Full Squad:

Backs: Rob Smith, Jamie Henthorne, Damien Smith, Matthew Jolly, Daffyd James, Shaun Thomas ,David Jones, Matt Taylor, Darren Pierce.

Forwards: John Osborne, Paul Edwards, Daniel Horseman, Chris Edwards, Brendan Sullivan, Dan Evans, Brett Mountney, Jack Dawson, Ryan Thomas, Dan Crandon, Chris James, Joe Campbell, Leigh Taylor, Steve Evans, David Ford.

Captaining the side will be David Ford whilst Jason Williams has been added to the coaching team taking responsibility for the backs. Johnston added that further signings are imminent including two more threequarters and if there are any players out there who think they could add to the Tredegar cause then they will more than welcome to attend club training sessions at the Recreation Ground on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Johnston will be able to see how the squad adapts to new season when they play Llantrisant away in a pre-season friendly on Saturday 29th August.

In the first of the round robin games in Tredegar's pre-season tournament against Torquay and Tiverton, Tredegar played Torquay and were victors by 10-0, with tries from full-back Robert Smith and left wing Daniel Davies.

Tredegar will play Blackwood away in their first game of the new season. Full fixture list to follow.

Tredegar's director of coaching Robert Johnston was delighted to name David Ford as club captain for Tredegar's tilt at the first division in the forthcoming season. The ebullient number 8 was a huge success at the Recreation Ground last season and with a pedigree encompassing spells with Newport, Cross Keys and Newbridge, Ford has the experience and attitude that bodes well for the future.

Johnstone added that Welsh rugby's top points scorer Jason Williams is taking on the role of backs coach whilst the forwards will remain in the capable hands of Gareth Johnston. With work going on behind the scenes it is understood that Tredegar hope to sign several players with first division experience over the next few weeks as well as retaining most of last years squad.

The coaches will commence training sessions in July at the Recreation ground every Tuesday & Thursday and all players new and old are welcome to attend.

New Tredegar Captain David Ford is pictured below.

Pre-season training starts the first week in July, where new and old players will be made most welcome. Tredegar RFC will also be holding a supporters meeting where members will be brought up to date with club matters on Tuesday July 16th at 7-30pm at the Rugby Club.
