Tredgar RFC Minis
Teams - What Can Be Expected
Under 8's
This squad is for players who are under 8 years of age as at 1 September.
Like all the other teams, we have regular matches both home and away as well as various festivals and tournaments on Sunday mornings so please ring and check to see if there is a match
We play tag rugby but have an added law in that after six tags the ball is turned over to the opposition this helps to promote passing skills.
We focus on the children having fun, enjoying ourselves and learning basic rugby skills through tag rugby.
Coaching:
We work on individual skills of:
Running with the ball
Evasion - side steps, swerving, change of pace
Handling skills - ball familiarity, static passing, moving passing
Running in support of the ball carrier
Tagging (Tackling) - positioning, awareness
Decision Making as an individual
And group skills of:
Attack - working together to move forward including passing, evasion and support
Defence - keeping a defensive line, reforming a line, working together
Decision Making as a team.
And learning the rules of tag rugby
Under 9's
This squad is for players who are under 9 years of age as at 1 September.
Like all the other teams, we have regular matches both home and away as well as various festivals and tournaments on Sunday mornings so please ring and check to see if there is a match
The under 9's coaches promote team spirit, safe rugby, good sportsmanship but most importantly that rugby is fun! We have a saying "it's not an individual that scores a try, it’s the team" rugby is very much a team sport!!
The under 9s is a major step up and a big culture shock for the players especially during their first competitive match! Practice with tackle bags and crashpads is fine - but they don't tackle back!!
Tackling skills are introduced at individuals own pace to ensure correct techniques are employed from both an offensive and defensive perspective. At all times we strive to enjoy our rugby at Tredegar and whilst winning is often very enjoyable, we certainly do not encourage a 'Win at all Cost' attitude.
Coaching
Continuing with the development of the players skills as under 8’s
We work on additional skills of:
‘Physical’ tackling – how to tackle safely
Kicking out of hand
Under 10's
This squad is for players who are under 10 years of age as at 1 September.
Like all the other teams, we have regular matches both home and away as well as various festivals and tournaments on Sunday mornings so please ring and check to see if there is a match
Under 10's play 10-side contact rugby and having started contact as Under 9's should find the season less of a step up than last year. That said, there is still a lot to learn.
At U10 teams play 10-a-side rugby with scrums and Lineouts introduced. Both are uncontested (i.e. the side putting the ball in to the scrum or lineout has to win it). The use of scrums starts to get the players thinking about positions and the difference between forwards and backs. Every effort is made to give all players experience at all positions and not to pigeonhole players too early.
Coaching

The under 12’s is a major step up and a big culture shock for the players, especially during their first competitive match!
The game is now played on a full side pitch with 15-a-side, there are still passive scrums but there are full Lineouts, full hand off and hookers must strike for the ball.
