Tredegar (10) Ystrad Rhondda (15)

April 16th, 2008

Fifteen points from the boot of Ystrad Rhondda's Wayne Jervis proved to be the deciding factor in a closely contested game where Tredegar scored the only try of the game.

With the league leaders looking to consolidate their position at the top of Division 2, there was little to chose between the two sides during the first half.

The deadlock was broken when Dave Davies in the centre burst over after one of his trademark runs and Greg Jones conversion saw Tredegar get on the score sheet just before half time.

With the referree allowing 11 minutes of extra time during the first half a Greg Jones penalty was recipricated by Jervis first sucessful kick of the evening, seeing Tredegar lead 10 points to 3 at the interval.

With Tredegar enjoying territorial advantage during the first half they had it all to do when replacement James Atwell received his third yellow card of the season and Jervis trusty boot saw the visitors get back into contention with two penalties when the home side were depleted.

A Darryl Carter drop goal just sailed past the posts and when a Greg Jones chargedown was adjudged a knock on lady luck deserted Tredegar in their hour of need.

Ystrad were blatantly offside for long periods but their indiscretions were not picked up by the man in the middle and Jervis' speculative drop goal saw the visitors nudge ahead.

Despite Tredegar's efforts they could not improve on their first half showing and a final penalty from Jervis sealed the visitors win.

Whilst Ystrad grabbed the spoils Tredegar grabbed the glory by scoring the only try of the game and the home defence was magnificent with the visitors unable to cross the line.
Ystrad went home with 4 points well earned but Tredegar gained a valuable bonus point and with 4 fixtures remaining look well set to finish in the top half of the table.
