Match Reports 2011/12

Tredegar (11) Glamorgan Wanderers (18)

November 12th 2011

Tredegar welcomed Glamorgan Wanderers back to the recreation ground after a seven year absence with the last fixture between these two old adversaries taking place in 2004.

With both teams languishing at the foot of Division 1, the Wanderers came out on top in a game that Tredegar could and should have won.

Hampered by the withdrawal of Rhys Hallet, Tredegar drafted in former favourite Matt Taylor to replace their injured captain and Taylor showed he has lost none of his sharp skills at the base of the scrum being Tredegar's main catalyst in their impressive start to the game.

Tredegar drew first blood after just two minutes with a finely executed penalty by Greg Jones which was cancelled out on resumption of play when the experienced Gareth Cull slotted a penalty from wide out for the visitors.

Tredegar continued to pressurise and enjoyed territorial advantage with Ryan Thomas and Will Evans putting in some huge tackles whilst Cameron Price- Regan showed great promise with some barn storming runs.

Tredegar regained the lead when Gareth Lloyd crossed and Jones conversion increased the lead to eleven points to three at the interval.

However the second half saw Tredegar revert to the style of play they have employed so far this season and saw Cull's second penalty reduce the deficit whilst their first try by Owen Marshall drew the scores level. Culls conversion nudged the visitors ahead and whilst the game was not out of Tredegar's reach the Wanderers sniffed the scent of a win.

Tredegar failed to dominate in the second half and allowed the visitors to play expansive rugby wide out that resulted in Dan Lovell scoring a try to put the result out of sight.

A yellow card to Will Evans did not help the Tredegar cause despite the efforts of Andrew Grant and Steve Knight whilst Matt McGovern found it hard to make the breakthrough in the centre that has seen him become Tredegar's leading try scorer so far this season.

Tredegar's experiment of playing fly half Scott Amber at full back has not been effective and the number 10 should be given a run of games in the pivotal position where he had shown great promise earlier in the season.

Brett Mountney achieved another Tredegar milestone as this saw him achieve 53 appearances as a substitute coming off the bench.

With half the season's fixtures now completed without a win Tredegar need to knuckle down to the task in hand and with a bit of luck and application hopefully the wins will come in the league rundown.

Saturday Tredegar are away to Newbridge and will be looking to avenge the first defeat of the season.
