Match Reports 2010/11
Tredegar (12) Merthyr (5)
Feb 25th 2011
Tredegar had a taste of what may await them in Division 1 should their promotion campaign be successful.
In a development game full of endeavour and enterprise Tredegar played host to Merthyr under lights with both teams utilising the break from league rugby to give both their squads the opportunity to show their paces.
Although conditions were poor, the rugby both teams provided was first class with plenty of skill and enterprise coming from both teams.
Merthyr just shaded the territory in a scoreless first half but following the break Tredegar showed great endeavour and intent defying the conditions, with Dominic Pullen and Jordan Williams both crossing the whitewash. Dan Haymond got on the score sheet again with a well struck conversion in difficult conditions .
Following a speculative kick ahead Merthyr positioned themselves deep in Tredegar territory to see Geraint Handley grab a consolation try much against the run of play.
For Tredegar ,Matt Jolly stood out in the backs whilst Dan Robertson on the other wing had a busy night with Dan Haymond controlling matters from the pivotal position.
In the forwards Kristian Smith led from the front but the pick of the pack was Jordan WilIiams whose overall control at the base of the scrum and his barnstorming runs were rewarded with an outstanding individual try.
Saturday sees Tredegar continue in their quest for promotion at home to Penallta, kick off 2.30 at the Recreation Ground.
