Tredegar Ironsides (25) Tredegar (21)

Oct 30th 2010

With nearly 200 years of rugby i Tredegar shared between the Ironsides and Tredegar RFC, it is remarkable that the town's division two and division three rugby teams have only met on three previous occasions with the senior team leading the rubber 2 to 1.

As far as any one can remember the teams last met in 1989 when the Ironsides stole the spoils and have now repeated the feat some 21 years later recording a well deserved win scoring four tries to three winning 24 points to 21.

Both Tredegar teams had byes in the WRU cup competition and chose to take the opportunity to engage in a rare local derby and Ironsides showed from the start that this was indeed their cup final.

Although Ironsides denied Tredegar possession for the first quarter, Tredegar showed their class with three first half tries by Tom Mcpherson, Steve Knight and Mark Mcgovern all converted by former Tredegar fly-half Greg Jones who appeared courteosy of Blackwood RFC.

Ironsides hit back before the break with a solo try from scrumhalf Greg Jenkins.

Ironsides fielded ex Tredegar prop Ian Evans and full-back Craig Monaghan whilst Tredegar had former Ironsides flanker Steve Evans in their ranks and with all to play for the Ironsides raised their game with tries by Daffyd Morgan ,Simon Hughes, and John James and with Jenkins brace of conversions saw a famous victory on the cards.

Tredegar's Mark Mcgovern showed some nice touches including a try saving tackle and Tredegar could have pulled the iron out of the fire when both Steve Knight and Greg Jones missed certain try scoring opportunities in the dying minutes.

So its all square at 2 all with Ironsides claiming a famous victory and Tredegar look forward to the return fixture at home on the Rec.
