Match Reports 2008/9
Rumney (12) Tredegar (7)
January 24th 2009
Tredegar’s cup quest ended at the hands of First Division Rumney who outscored the division 2 leaders by two tries to one.

This cup-tie was the eighteenth meeting between the sides with Tredegar previously winning on 9 occasions but the home pack were too savvy on the day for the men in red. With doubts over the game taking place due to the amount of water on the pitch the heavy going suited the home team whose pack edged Tredegar’s in the tight.

Jamie Henthorne was doubly unlucky not to cross the try line but Rumney took their opportunities scoring two first half tries with one converted which saw them ahead twelve nil at the break. Although Tredegar put up a more spirited performance in the second- half , ill discipline probably cost them the match when prop Paul Douglas was sent off for stamping.

Nevertheless Tredegar fought back and but for some sloppy handling and wrong decisions could just have sneaked this one. Daffyd James try converted by Greg Jones put Tredegar back in contention but playing with depleted numbers the visitors could not pressurise enough to get that elusive score needed to allow them to make further progress in this years competition.

Tredegar’s future now lays in the league and although still top of the table the indiscipline of recent matches must be cut out if they are to achieve division 1 status.

Tredegar look for another 4 league points at home to Gilfach Goch on Saturday.
