Match Reports 2008/9

Gilfach Goch (33) Tredegar (8)

Rhydyfelin (11) Tredegar (14)

April 2009

Tredegar's tremendous season finished on a high when the Swalec 2nd Division champions completed their 2008/2009 league campaign with a hard fought away win at Rhydefelin. Tredegar's marvellous achievement at winning the league with four games left to play looked to be fizzling out when they suffered a set back at Gilfach Goch and in attrocious weather conditions the champions elect went down to a 33 - 8 defeat with a solitary penalty by Greg Jones and a consolation try from Jamie Sims being the only riposte the visitors could muster.

However, two days later ,Tredegar finished the season on a high with an impressive win over Rhydefelin who are fighting for survival in Division Two. Tredegar's fourteen  points to eleven win saw the champions achieve 19 wins out of 22 games played. Playing four games away from home during the last nine days of their season, Tredegar extended their lead at the top of the division by a further four points. Rhydefelin could not stop the Tredegar winning machine and following a penalty try, scrum half Matt Taylor bolted over to score Tredegar's last try in Division 2.

Greg Jones slotted both conversions adding another four points to his personal tally. With Ryan Thomas excelling in the boilerhouse in both games Tredegar look to have uncovered another gem who will benefit from the challenges of Division 1 rugby next season whilst Joe Campbell rounded off a great season putting in another  man of the match performance in the final game of the season.

Tredegar now look forward to life in Division 1 and the management wish to thank all players, coaches, backroom team,  supporters club, sponsors and  all supporters for all their hard work during this momentous season and look forward to welcoming all to the Rec next season.

Tredegar wish to take this opportunity to congratulate Trefil RFC in winning the Cyrus Davies Cup and also congratulate Tredegar Ironsides RFC on their excellent run in the Swalec Plate competition.
