Match Reports 2008/9
Tredegar (95) Fleur De Lys (14)
April 18th 2009
Tredegar's tremendous season continued at the last home fixture of the season when they demolished Fleur De Llys by a massive 95 points. Having already clinched promotion and the championship last week, Tredegar turned on the style scoring 15 tries and setting some new records on the way.
Damien Smith headed the trio of triple try scorers and made history by becoming the first Tredegar player to score hat-tricks in three consecutive matches. Jamie Henthorne's three tries took him to 25 for the season and with three games still to go it is still possible for the speedster to break Ken Pugh's 40 year old record of most tries in a season.
Daffyd James grabbed a hat-trick whilst a brace came from flamboyant full back Rob Smith. Jack Dawson's 100th league appearance was capped with a well deserved try and Darren Pearce, David Ford and Greg Jones completed the try scoring rout. Jones nailed ten conversions giving him a match total of 25.
Flower could not match Tredegar in any department and Jamie Henthorne epitomised the talent in the Tredegar team by running in a spectacular try from his own goal line. Tredegar were crowned champions by
WRU vice president Ken Hewitt who presented the league trophy to an ecstatic Tredegar team who sent the delirious rec faithfull home, as pleased as punch. Tredegar still have three away games to complete their league programme and have also drawn Newbridge in the semi finals of the Ben Francis Cup and this will be an indicator of the challenges the team will face in Division One next year.
