Fleur De Lys (9) v Tredegar (16)

December 13th 2008

Three first half penalties from the boot of scrum half S Davies and a bruising encounter with the Fleur De Lys pack couldn't prevent Tredegar gaining another win on the road to keep their promotion campaign on course, consigning the former first division team closer to the relegation zone.

Whilst Tredegar played all the rugby, the heavier Flower eight bullied and intimidated all afternoon but with little skill behind, a Tredegar win was well deserved. Tredegar were 3 nil down after 8 minutes but a well worked try by winger Damien Smith immediately from the restart saw Tredegar take the lead that they were never to lose.

Greg Jones conversion and penalty kept Tredegar ahead at the interval with Tredegar enjoying territorial superiority. To their credit Flower played the kicking game to get back into Tredegar's half and Davies fired over another two penalties to complete their scoring.

The second half saw the ugly side of the home pack who bullied throughout and a mass brawl affected the Tredegar performance.  On a heavy pitch, Fleur De Lys threw the kitchen sink at the visitors but could not breach Tredegar's defence at all. Tredegar stood tall throughout and with 2 Greg Jones penalties edged away from the former first division 1 outfit

With the ref playing nearly 15 minutes extra time Tredegar came away with the win and three points which has now extended their lead at the top of Division 2. Next Saturday Tredegar resume cup duty and are away to Pill RFC.
