Abercynon (16) v Tredegar (25)

September 13th 2008

Daffyd James was the toast of Tredegar sealing a fine away victory against Abercynon with his try in the closing minutes. Greg Jones conversion rubbed further salt into the home sides wounds by depriving them of a losing bonus point.

Fielding a much changed team from last week Tredegar found it difficult to gel and lacked cohesion and autthority throughout the first half. Abercynon took the lead with a Matt Turner penalty and a Huw Davies try. Tredegar dominated territorily but could not turn pressure into points and the only highlight of a disappointing opening half was a scintillating run by Jamie Henthorne with the winger racing 60 metres only to be pulled down to deny him a try.

Following an eight nil lead at half time Abercynon drew first blood in the second half with a try from John Lidster. Shortly after the restart, cynon's Shannon Rekei and Tredegar's Matt Taylor were both yellow carded although Rekei was fortunate not to have received a red card for blatant punching.

As the Tredegar pack gained superiority Jack Dawson forced his way over the line and Greg Jones conversion saw Tredegar claw themselves back to within 2 points .
Abercynon tired and could not match the fitness levels of the visitors and with their pack repeatedly on the back foot they were forced to concede a scrum against the head.

Tredegar's pack gradually took control and when Paul Edwards and Paul Douglas entered the fray Abercynon struggled up front. The awesome pace of Rob Smith saw the fullback put Tredegar in the lead when he touched down scoring his third try of the season.

Tedegar's lead was shortlived when Turner's penalty reinstated Abercynon's lead but Daffyd James try broke the home team's heart securung a victory for Tredegar. Greg Jones conversion deprived the losers of a bonus point and Tredegar finished the more stronger.

With the exceptional pace on the wings and at full back ,Tredegar need to harness their effectiveness and will need to complement it with a sound centre pairing.

Tredegar hope to carry on their good start to the season hosting Brynmawr at the Recreation ground on Saturday.
