Tredegar RFC Awards 2008 /2009

Season 2008/2009

Tredegar finished off their tremendous season at their awards presentation evening organised by the Supporter’s Club. Recognising the magnificent achievement of gaining promotion and becoming Division 2 East Champions, Allan Medlicott gave an impressive resume of the season.

Tredegar won the league with four games in hand, winning nineteen of the twenty two games played , amassing 634 points along the way. Scoring eighty seven tries, Tredegar emphasised the attacking prowess of the team and the attractive style of rugby played at the Recreation ground under the watchful eyes of the coaching team headed by the Johnston brothers.

Greg Jones was top scorer with 260 points and now has passed over 300 league points in his career with 400 points scored in all games. With a huge tally of eighty one conversions, Jones broke Ralph Thomas’ 40 year old  record which was set in 1968.

Top try scorer was Jamie Henthorne with twenty five tries whilst Damien Smith crossed sixteen times and became the first player in the club’s history to score three hat-tricks in consecutive matches.

Full back Rob Smith also hit double figures crossing fourteen times.

In the forwards, David Ford scored eleven tries during the season with Mr Dependable, Jack Dawson crossing five times. Wayne Sims and Steve Knight got three a piece.

Milestones passed during this momentous season saw Tredegar pass 9000 league points so far and their 90 points to nil cup victory against Pontllanfraith was the biggest winning margin in the clubs history. Jack Dawson and captain Paul Edwards notched up 100 appearances  both joining the exclusive Centurians Club.

 

David Ford ,Wayne Simms and Jack Dawson  gained representative honours and were selected for the Welsh Academicals against Japan with Dawson being honoured with the captaincy.

 

Following a video presentation of the seasons highlights  by Glyn Walters the Supporter’s  Club officials, Mike Phillips, along with Malcolm & Stephen Higgs made the presentations to the main award winners who were voted for by the clubs supporters.

 

The Player of the Year award went to fullback Rob Smith for his flamboyancy in attack and his rock solid  performance as the last line of defence.

 

Captain Paul Edwards’ inspirational leadership saw him take the Clubman of the Year Award

 

 

whilst his front row compatriot, Daniel Horseman picked up the Most Promising Player award.

 

Damien Smith’s remarkable triple hat-trick achievement was recorded with a special award.

Tredegar secretary, Tony Lewis presented the club awards and the receipients included Paul Edwards who picked up his second Clubman of the Year award,

with Daniel Horseman also getting his second award of the night as Most Promising Player.

Lewis presented the club's Player of the Year award jointly to Wayne Simms & Joe Campbell.

Whilst only a few players see their efforts rewarded by awards the whole squad, coaches and backroom team can take great credit becoming Division 2 Champions as no-one can take away that achievement or proud memories of a fantastic season.

To round off proceedings Lyndon Evans presented the supporters club with a framed montage recording the achievement for posterity . So Tredegar said its goodbye to Division 2 and look forward to locking horns with the likes of Newbridge, Blackwood & Merthyr and welcome the challenges that life in Division 1 will bring next year.

The evening & season finished off with music from lively covers band Thick As Thieves.
