Tredegar (27) v Mountain Ash (24)

March 7th, 2009

Tredegar can thank number 8 David Ford for saving their blushes and could well have lost this top of the table tussle through sheer indiscipline yet again.

Having only lost once so far this season as far back as October Tredegar carry their dream of promotion on and now head Division 2 by 9 points with two games in hand over their nearest rivals.

This seven try thriller at the top of the division saw Tredegar edge out third placed Mountain Ash in a pulsating game.

With Ford motoring over for the first try, converted by Greg Jones the home team played with panache and looked  like the division leaders elect. Jack Dawson soon crossed whilst an easily kickable  penalty from the boot of Nick Griffin saw the Old Firm get onto the scoreboard.

With Tredegar leading twelve points to three flanker Chris James was sent for an early bath & when Chris Edmunds crossed it looked as if the visitors were in with a shout of winning playing against 14 men after just 20 minutes. However an enormous kick from Greg Jones extended Tredegar's lead just before the interval.

With a half time roasting from the coaches Tredegar began to dominate play and special mention needs to be made of hooker Daniel Horseman who was given a full game to demonstrate his skills and showed what an exciting prospect he is and should be part of Tredegar's front row for many years to come. Jack Dawson's second try was followed by Ford's second and Greg Jones conversion saw depleted Tredegar lead by 17 points.

However the Tredegar malaise set in yet again and when Joe Campbell received a yellow card Tredegar's 13, valiantly could not prevent the visitors from crossing twice to gain a losing bonus point.

Tredegar's four tries were rewarded with a bonus point and their supporters must wonder how good this side really is as they won yet again with depleted numbers and if Tredegar can hold their discipline and keep fifteen players on the field someone is going to get a thrashing.
