Abergavenny (5) Tredegar (50)

April 11th 2009

Abergavenny v Tredegar Video Highlights

Tredegar capped a magnificent season by sealing the Division 2 east title with another win away on the road. Abergavenny could not stop the party whilst Tredegar uncorked the champagne, running in seven tries to ensure promotion to the First Division as champions.

With winger  Daffyd Smith crossing for another hat-trick  and  number eight, Dave Ford  getting a brace, the try scoring was completed by the flamboyant Rob Smith at full back and  winger Jamie Henthorne who made his twenty second touchdown of the season.

Abergavenny winger James Smith scored from an  interception when Tredegar were attacking and although their forwards competed the class and fitness of the visitors got the bonus point victory in the bag and with four games remaining Tredegar intend to keep on the winning trail. Joe Campbell stood out amonst the forwards but all credit must go to the pack who laid the platform for the talented backline to shine, Greg Jones added to his impressive season's tally by slotting six conversions and a penalty.

As in so many games this season the fitness of the Tredegar team came through in the second half and all credit must go to coach Gareth Johnstone . Director of coaching Robert Johnstone said " We are more than delighted to score over 100 tries so far this season and over the moon to gain promotion as Division 2 champions. I would like to thank the squad, backroom team, management , sponsors &  supporters for all their efforts so far this season to see us gain promtion to Division 1 as champions.

However now the hard work will begin  as we face the different changes that life in Division will bring." Wednesday Tredegar are away to Rhydefelin and on Saturday Tredegar face Fleur De Lys on the Rec at the last home game of the season
