Match Report by Lyndon Evans

Gareth Kearney's pre-nuptial celebrations deprived Tredegar of 6 first team regulars leaving the men from the heads of the valleys with an insurmountable challenge at League leaders Penallta.

Fielding a makeshift side Tredegar dominated initial proceedings with Stuart Jarman putting in another action man display bagging a brace of tries.

Jarman’s first touchdown saw Tredegar lead 5 nil but Penallta gradually clawed their way back into the game with a well taken try by left wing A Jenkins.

Rees, first successful kick of the afternoon saw “ the Pitmen “ 2 points ahead at the break and it looked as if Tredegar could well have deprived the home team of their unbeaten tag.

However following the break Darryl Carter was yellow carded after foolishly joining in a fracas and immediately Penalty capitalised with a speculative kick that saw flanker A Powell cross, fielding the ball from a clearly offside position that was not spotted by the ref.
Rees’ conversion extended the home side lead.

Some inept tackling by the visitors then allowed “the pitman’s “ right wing J Powell to cross wide out to lead 19 points to 5.
With a second half substitution Tredegar's Chris James showed direction and leadership to steady the ship and forced Tredegar back into contention.
Two Darryl Carter conversions and Jarman’s second try saw Tredegar pull back to within 3 points of their hosts looking likely to pull off an unexpected victory.

However the last twenty minutes saw Penallta play to their strengths pinning the visitors back in their 22 and inevitably Newbridge No 8 G Thomas playing on permit for Penallta crashed over and Rees’s final conversion sealed the “ Pitmans “ win to extend their unbeaten record.
In the circumstances Tredegar did well but yet again wrong options and poor tackling cost them the scalp of the league leaders.

On Saturday Tredegar hit the cup trail with an away fixture at Llangefni on Anglesey
