Tredegar (29) NHSOB 30

Nov 3rd 2007

Match Report by Lyndon Evans

Tredegar RFC held a minutes silence for former player Paul Woods who recently passed away, before their Division 2 encounter with Newport High School Old Boys at the Recreation Ground.

With both teams experiencing mixed fortunes in the league the game produced 9 tries, to see the visitors just edge a keenly contested game, with Tredegar pipped at the post by one point, securing a losing bonus point for their try scoring efforts.

In a game devoid of skill from both sides, the lead changed hands 5 times with Tredegar and Stuart Jarman providing the only attacking thrusts from the home team.

If the rest of the team, particularly the backs, had mirrored Jarmans effort and work rate the result could have been very different but the visitors claimed a vital away victory that now sees Tredegar feature in the bottom half of the table.

JJack Dawson and Chris Jamess tries, both converted by Carter saw Tredegar lead 14 points to 12 at the interval.

The Old Boys struck first in the second half with an Andy Screen try but Tredegar went ahead following a Paul Southall touchdown , converted by Carter. The visitors hit back with Tom Diggles second try but Jarmans barn-storming performance saw the number 8 crash over and Carters conversion saw Tredegar lead by 4 points.

With the game held on a knife edge and Tredegar looking to hold on to an unlikely victory, the visitors fly half, Will Edwards, managed to fool the home defence, touching down and edged them in front with only minutes to go.

Carter fluffed a penalty that would have seen Tredegar sealed the win but the visitors claimed the spoils.

Whilst the Tredegar forwards can hold their own against anyone in the division the backline lacks direction andamp; leadership andamp; the team could face relegation unless there is an immediate improvement.
