Match Reports 2007/8
NHSOB (7) Tredegar (28)
Saturday March 22nd. 2008
Tredegar scrum half Matt Taylor put in a man of the match performance scoring
a brace of tries to avenge the Old Boys narrow 1 point victory at Tredegar
earlier in the season.
On a bitterly cold day the Old Boys chose to play with the advantage of a
howling wind but Tredegar immediately took the game to the home side with
the visiting forwards dominating all phases of play.
Taylor scored the first of his tries after just 10 minutes and it looked as
if the home side would concede an avalanche of points. The Tredegar pack kept
up the pressure with Joe Campbell cajoling his superior eight at every opportunity.
Atwill, Harwood & Douglas exerted the pressure up front & when winger
Daniel Davies split the defence up popped Darryl Carter to touchdown extending
Tredegar’s lead. Two Greg Jones conversions saw Tredegar lead 14 nil
at the break.
Stuart Jarman was immense in the back row but with yellow cards the order
of the day Newport’s tight head prop received his marching orders whilst
James Atwill & Daniel Davies both spent 10 minutes in the bin.
Davies’ infringement saw the ref award the old boys a converted penalty
try but such was Tredegar’s fortitude they never really threatened to
score.
Jamie Noble in the second row was the outstanding forward on the park dominating
the lineout & putting in the hard work both in the tight & loose &
was Tredegar’s most effective ball carrying forward.
With the Tredegar pack dictating play substitute Jason Rowan barged over &
Jones conversion sailed straight through the posts. In a keenly contested
encounter the Old Boys fought tooth and nail but when Taylor sped over for
his second try the home team’s heads dropped and Tredegar controlled
events. With Greg Jones bagging 4 conversions and dictating play with his
accurate boot the Old Boys slipped further down the table whilst this bonus
point win edged Tredegar out of the relegation zone.
