Tredegar (20) v Mountain Ash (16)

Oct 13th 2007

Match Report by Lyndon Evans

A brace of tries by winger Daniel Davies saved Tredegar's bacon defeating Mountain Ash and depriving the Old Firm of their unbeaten record.

Tredegar showed their intent from the off with a Ben Harding take at the lineout allowing a Gareth Kearney burst through the centre to put Davies over for his third try of the season after just 2 minutes. Kearney's conversion saw the home side lead by seven points and the visitors looked as if they had it all to do.

With the Tredegar pack firing on all cylinders the home side should have run up a big score but their efforts could not be reciprocated by their backs who put in a dismal performance allowing the visitors to stay in contention. Steve James put over a magnificent penalty from 2 metres in his own half which gave the visitors hope and if he had been more accurate the Old Firm could well have nosed in front at the break.

Immediately after the restart the Old Firm's flanker Scot Davies charged through and his try saw the visitors take the lead by one point.

With Darryl Carter adding two penalties and Steve James bagging one, the game held on a fine knife edge and it was only Davies second try of the game that secured victory for the homeside. Carter's conversion saw Tredegar lead by 9 points but a do or die effort by the Old Firm saw Richard Evans score a consolation try in the dying minutes.
