Mountain Ash (20) Tredegar (9)

Saturday February 16th

Mountain Ash retained third spot in Division 2 of the Asda League after overcoming a spirited Tredegar side running out winners 20 points to 9.

The Old Firms captain Scott Davies lead the way with the opening score and a further effort from centre Geraint Way, along with 10 points from the boot of fly-half Matthew Parfitt saw the home team deservedly run out winners.

Although 3 penalties from Greg Jones kept Tredegar in the game they never threatened the home try line, and  the visitors lacked direction in mid-field. Once again the Tredegar pack were immense but another disjointed performance behind the scrum saw the visitors take the wrong options and make errors that saw a closely fought game just being edged by the home team.

James Atwill up front demonstrated the full range of his abilities and no doubt will be a tremendous asset to the Tredegar cause but once Martin Vaughan in the back row left the field Tredegar failed to exert their usual forward dominance. With their back play thoroughly disjointed the Tredegar three quarters will have to improve if they are to stave off relegation as they are now perously close to the drop.

With the next home game against league leaders Penallta on March 1st Tredegar need to regroup and ask themselves some stern questions.
