Tredegar (26) Ystrad Rhondda 15
Sept 26th 2009
Tredegar broke their duck in Division 1, East, gaining a bonus point win against Ystrad Rhondda at the Recreation Ground.

With Ystrad Rhondda enjoying territorial advantage it was a stirling defensive effort that left the visitors in blue in turmoil when Tredegar stormed out of defence and Darren Pierce broke the covering tackler, which saw the outside half scampering over to put Tredegar ahead. Gary Wilkes conversion added the two points and Ystrad knew it was not going to be their day.

Resuming the attack Ystrad had Tredegar on the backfoot and looked to cross the line only for the would be scorer to be well held up and denied the score. Tredegar continued in a defensive mode snuffing out attack after attack with the back row of David Ford, Leigh Taylor and Chris James surpressing all the visitors could throw at them. Brett Mountney held the scrum and ensured the Tredegar pack never took a backward step at the set piece Following another break out David Ford beat the cover tackler and burst through to score and Wilkes' conversion saw the home team ahead by 14 points.

Ystrad again resumed the attack and although dominating territory could not punch holes in the midfield which was controlled by Daffyd Rosser and Luke James . Gary Wilkes ran in for Tredegar's third try giving Tredegar a nineteen point lead at the Interval.

Following a lengthy interval Ystrad resumed the attack and scored a converted try and penalty which was scant reward for their efforts. Tredegar's Daniel Davies left the field with a hamstring injury only to see his replacement Jamie Henthorne touch down, outsprinting his opposite number and gaining that first vital bonus point of the season. Wilkes converted achieving a personal match tally of eleven points.

Live wire scrumhalf Jamie Parry proved to be the catalyst Tredegar needed and is developing a good partneship with his half back partner Pierce. Joe Campbell made his prescence felt when he entered the arena adding further to Ystrad's woes. Throwing caution to the wind the visitors snatched the final try but couldn't prevent Tredegar from winning their first game in Division 1 with a bonus point to boot.

Tredegar's first division campaign is now well and truly underway and they look forward to meeting Beddau away next Saturday.
