Match Reports 2009/10

Tredegar (24) Bedlinog (14)

October 10th 2009

Last season Tredegar and Bedlinog were flying high at the top of division 2 but life in the first division has proved to be difficult for the two newly promoted teams who are both desperate for points.

With nothing much separating both teams the first half saw Gary Wilkes and his opposite number Ben Grzseica  bagging a brace of penalties  apiece. Joe Campbell and Chris James marshalled the base of the scrum whilst young Jamie Parry and Darren Pierce are forming a strong half back partnership.

Starting the second half Tredegar slipped behind when Grzeica's third shot at goal was sucessfull but Rob Smith showed a flash of brilliance cutting through the covering defence to deliver a beautifully timed pass to put Wilkes over for Tredegar's first try of the afternoon. Wilkes conversion added another sixteen match points to build on his season's tally.

Darren Pierce's confidence was boosted when he spotted an eye for the gap and powering through the flyhalf got the touchdown that disheartened the visitors.  Wilkes did the honours sending the ball sailing between the posts and Tredegar held a 21 points to 9 lead when the visitors ill discipline finally ended any aspirations they had of winning.

Following a speculative try by Scott Giles, the visitors second row Grizelah was given his marching orders for foul play and in an instant later Carl Giles was yellow carded and  was immediately shown a red card for dissent and the visitors spent the remainder of the game with just thirteen players. Wilkes had the final say in the matter slotting a penalty to see Tredegar win 24 points to 14 and climb to eighth in the table just a point behind Ystrad Rhondda. With Tredegar starting to gel another win pushes them up the table and way from the relegation zone.
