Tredegar (8) Beddau (16)
Feb 5th 2010
At their first home game of 2010 Tredegar lost to Beddau who are propping up the foot of Division 1 East in a dour encounter under floodlights at the recreation ground. Tredegar were looking to add another victory to their league points tally but Beddau proved to be too hard a nut to crack and by fielding three twenty year olds in the pack the home side lacked the experience to compete upfront.
With a strong wind at their backs Beddau notched up 3 penalties through the boot of Steve Robinson whilst Tredegar's only first half reposte was a solitary penalty by Gary Wilkes. With the first half finely balanced Tredegar missed a sure fire opportrunity to get the first try of the night when they failed to score following some sloppy handling.
After the interval the Beddau forwards combined well to get their first touchdown of the evening and when Robinson slotted the conversion Tredegar were chasing the game. Although Tredegar missed another two scoring chances, when the cavalry arrived in the form of forward substitutes Brendan Sullivan, Daniel Horseman and Steve Knight the Tredegar pack dominated play and took two balls against the head in the scrum. This led to Beddau substituting their front row and the remainder of the game was restricted to passive scrums taking the initiative away from Tredegar.
Young Jordan Williams , normally a second row, deputised at number eight for the injured Dave Ford enjoyed his new role and following a brilliant individual effort got the try that Tredegar had desperately needed. With the pacy Daniel Davies introduced into the game as a late substitution Tredegar fought hard to secure the win but when winger Gary Wilkes was dispatched to the sin bin Tredegar were left to wonder What if ?.
Fielding some promising youngsters the future of rugby at Tredegar looks promising and new additions to the squad include Christian Smith who at six feet seven inches will have a sound career at the top level. Jonathan Jacas has followed his father's footsteps and joined the club after a spell at Caerphilly whilst promising Dragons academy players Steve Brown and Cameron Price-Regan have been seconded to Tredegar for the remainder of the season.
Tredegar's next game is away to league leaders UWIC and with further interruption to league rugby due to the home internationals Tredegar are busy re-arranging fixtures already postponed and look to have a busy run in to the season's end.
