Bedlinog (24) Tredegar (9)

December 12 2009 - SWALEC CUP

Tredegar's cup campaign started and finished at Bedlinog who out foxed their  visitors scoring two tries, one conversion and three penalties  to  the visitors three penalties. Whilst the foxes enjoyed territorial superiority , Tredegar fielding four youth products did extremely well to restrict their division one compatriots to a solitary first half try.

Although Tredegar only ventured into the opposing 22 on one occasion the sure footed boot of Darren Pierce playing out of position at full back slotted two immenses penalties to see Tredegar trail by just 10 points . However just before the break, Brett Mountney received his marching orders being red carded for a completely out of character offence .

Tredegar's first half lethargy was replaced by some dynamic forward play in the third quarter and it looked as if the visitors could be capable of sneaking the win. In the second row  the youth and exhuberance of Jordan Williams was the perfect foil for the experienced warhorse Jason Price and this pairing in the boilerhouse allowed captain Dave Ford clear domination of the line out.  However when Joe Campbell was yellow carded Bedlinog  turned up the heat and extended their lead from the onsuing penalty.

When Campbell returned to the fray Tredegar faced further disruption when hooker Darren Hughes spent ten minutes in the bin and the sheer weight of numbers allowed the foxes to end the game as they began with their second try. So Tredegar have an early exit from the cup and only have their own indiscipline to blame and much effort needs to be instilled into the team to reduce the indiscretions and cards.

Next Saturday's home game in the league against Blackwood is being played at Eugene Cross Park Ebbw Vale due to fixture congestion with Tredegar Ironsides whilst the Boxing Day game away at UWIC has been re-arranged for Wednesday 30th December with a 2.30 kick off to accomodate the students. Tredegar officials are concerned and have made representations to the WRU as whilst it makes no difference to the students when the game is played all Tredegar players hold down full time jobs and will be forced to take unpaid leave or holidays to participate.

Tredegar players and officials extend seasons greetings to all supporters and wish you all A Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
